Are we ALONE?

Are we the only ones that are alive in this universe? Are there such things as aliens? Other kinds of living things? I know that it was proven by scientists and all, but really... It seems impossible to think that we're the only ones here.

  1. This is kinda like Emma's post...but I guess there's no way to find out until they find us or Voyager 1 gets to them...

  2. Its very likely there are other living beings out there. With the number of planets in the universe at least 1 other should be viable

  3. @Lily: Voyager 1 is too far away to send us signals because of the technology used to create it.

Also, it is highly improbable that we are alone. After all, there are thousands of quintillions of stars in the universe, and so many possible stars that harbor life, and so many planets that harbor life that it is almost impossible to not have any other life out there.

  4. Going along with Declan, it is highly probably that there is life out in space, that has already been scientifically proven. But intelligent or not, considering the fact that we have been spilling out radio and television signals for almost a century, and no intelligent life has responded (within the 90 light year radius), it will be like looking for a needle in a haystack. The odds itself of life appearing this close to us is rare itself. The Milky Way itself is an astounding 100,000 light years in diameter! Voyager 1 has only traveled 10.4 billion kilometers out in space, less than 1/12 of one light year. Then you have to consider other galaxies...

  5. There is, without a doubt, some sort of life out there. However, we have absolutely no proof at all that any intelligent life is out there, and if so, if we managed to A; make a connection with these species, B; be able to understand how these species actually live (do they have the same systems as us? most likely not), and C; understand their methods of communication. If we can't even fully communicate with a dog or cat, how are we supposed to connect with another completely different species?

  6. That's a good question. The most likely answer is, we won't. It will be that simple. And hopefully there will be no misunderstandings in the area of "a handshake to us is something hurtful to them". I mean, if we did find another species, and miraculously managed to understand their way of life, then I'm assuming the communication barrier would still be highly difficult to breach. Considering all the possible differences between our species, it makes sense that it would be hard. Heck, they might not even have the same element that life is based on as us. Their life could be based on silicon, while ours is based on carbon! (it's proven that silicon could be a stand-in for carbon as the basic element for life)

  7. IF silicon is a stand in for carbon, could a human be created based on silicon? Would that make him/her/IT stronger or not? Would there be beneficial qualities or would it hurt the human thing? Is that even possible?

  8. The proximity of the earth to the sun is just exact enough that we have the perfect amount of sunlight—and drinkable water! There must be another planet—at the very least in another galaxy, that must be like ours. And going back to what Sophie—sorry—"Sandra J. Polk III" said, it is quite possible that a human could be based on silicon. I'm not sure that it would make the human stronger, but it would probably have some unpleasant side affects.
