I know we are going to continue this discussion in class another day, but I though I'd post this so that people who can't make it to class either today or next week could join the discussion and also so that we could discuss it without all the sidetracking and the loudness (if you were in class you know what I mean :) ) So here you go.
Does human nature exist? If so what is it? Is there a difference between human nature and instinct? How can you prove the existence or non-existence of human nature?
Well there you go: DISCUSS :)
I believe that human nature does exist. It exists in the form of instinct and in a common ethical/moral code among human beings. My proof of this is that all over the world, in different families, different religions, different cultures, with different points of view, there are a few basic ethical foundations. You shouldn't kill your own kind, you shouldn't kill children, you shouldn't steal, almost everyone no matter where they came from believes these things. Now there are exceptions of course, but there are exceptions to everything. The exceptions to this in my opinion are people like serial killers, who I believe are basically defying human nature all together. I also believe there are some not so positive parts of human nature, I think greed, and jealousy, as well as an instinct to be better than everything else are part of human nature just as much as kindness. Almost every human being has them to some degree, most of us try to suppress them, but I don't think anyone can honestly say that they have never felt these things. And if they didn't come from human nature where did they come from? No one taught us to be greedy or jealous, in fact people try to each us not to be. We are born with those traits, they are human nature.
