An interesting dilema-true story

There was a lady in a coma with especially low chances of recovery and her parents wanted her to live. However, her former lover wanted to pull the plug and let her go so he could get a new girlfriend. The plug was eventually pulled. What would you have done if you were in charge of the situation?

  1. I would have pulled the plug and let her go.

  2. I would try to save her. If I couldn't I would let her go so that she wouldn't suffer.

  3. I am going to be a bit cold-hearted here.

If the guy wanted a new girlfriend, then couldn't he just leave her? Did he really have to kill her just so he could have another lover? That woman should have lived, regardless to the fact that the guy wanted a new girlfriend.

  4. I wouldn't have, because when people are in comas, there is a very big chance they will wake up again.

And why would you kill her immediately? Why not give her a chance?

  6. If I was the boyfriend or her parents I would have her keep fighting. If the boyfriend cares enough for her he would let her keep fighting instead of going on without a care for her. The parents no matter what should not have pulled the plug and let him go.

  7. Depending on the situation, I would keep the plug. If I was the boyfriend, I wouldn't pull the plug even if I did want a new girlfriend because that would technically be murder and could get me landed in jail. If I were the parents I'd obviously want to keep the lady alive. However, if she weren't likely to survive at all then I would probably pull the plug.

  9. Well, Etta, we can tell the boy doesn't really care for her that much, as he wants to pull the chord.

  10. Well, that doesn't mean she's dead yet.

I would understand if she had especially low chances and they needed the equipment for someone else, but there is currently no reason to actually pull that chord and make her die.

I agree that the boy did not care for her, but only because he was worrying about a new girlfriend while she was in a coma. However if the lady had almost no chance of survival I believe it would be important to end her suffering.

  12. You're not suffering if you're in a coma, squabs16. When you're in a coma, you're basically just sleeping/unconcious for a very long time. The point being that there is no pain.

  13. I still believe if she had extremely low chances it would be important to let her go. Though I would wait quite a while and definitely allow her a chance. I agree that it is basically established that there is no pain on a physical level and should have worded my post differently. However we don't know what actually goes on on a mental level, though we believe it to be just like sleeping but we can't know for sure. I also have learned that a coma can cause brain damage so you have to question quality of life IF she survives. I also think it is important to release her into whatever you believe she would move on to, if you believe she'd move on to nothing then it would be just like sleep anyway, and the doctors should use the medical equipment to save more lives.

People have come out of comas and said that there is no pain, mentally or physically. Also, if you pull the plug on her, her parents still have to suffer under the fact that their daughter didn't even have a chance to survive, brain damage or no brain damage. Finally, unless people needed the bed she was lying on or the hospital couldn't pay their electricity bill, for all I'm concerned she could stay there until 1 people needed the bed, or 2 she dies or recovers.

As I have said before I would want to give her time, by which I meant years, to recover before considering pulling the plug. Also the plug we are referring to is the plug to a machine that is keeping her alive, if after YEARS she can not live without a machine pumping her heart for her, it is extremely unlikely that she would ever wake up, or have any sort of functionality if she did. Finally there are only so many hospitals in the world with only so many beds, and even fewer of the machines like that needed to save someone's life. So consider that in keeping her alive the hospital may be sacrificing many other lives of people who also have families and likely, if she was in a coma for that long, a better possible quality of life then her. However I do agree that the plug should definitely not be pulled until the chances of her surviving with any sort of quality of life are almost zero.
