Is 2012 or any sort of apocalypse likely to happen?
I think that some sort of apocalypse is likely to happen to the world, even if it happens to be the death of the sun. I think that it is a high possibility that man may run out of resources before then. I think that way the world is going, we will end up dying off before we loose our sun.

Are you guys serious? Can we actually do a topic that has to relate with philosophy, not hypotheticals about the Mayan calendar?
ReplyDeleteSheepLord,
ReplyDeleteFirst, please end your question with a question mark! Let's try not to be sloppy. Did you proof your post at all?
Second, you need to elaborate on your post title or question. "Discuss" (with no period) is not elaboration.
Third, I tend to agree with Aragorn on this one. You told me your post would be a serious philosophical question. I will consider this, but will probably remove it. This topic strays far into speculation rather than grounds for serious philosophical argument. There are plenty of worthy philosophical questions, and some that are even related to the ideas behind your topic.
If you would like to give your post a broader philosophical significance, you may consider questions like "Will mankind survive until our Sun dies? If not, why not?" or "Would you like to live forever? Why or why not?" or "If their is an apocalypse, what form do you think it may take? Please give evidence for the form you think it will take." or "When the topic of apocalypse comes up, don't you think we are really speaking of another world war? Why or why not?"
There are some starters; please reformulate and try again.

You also do not make your topic very clear by your title. Of course the year 2012 is going to come around. If you are referring to the apocalypse, please actually give us a topic to discuss, not a hypothetical.
ReplyDeleteThe world was supposed to end in 1948. And in 2000. And in 2010. And in 1800. And in 2009. And it's supposed to end in 2012. That will not happen. As you can see, people have been predicting the world will end since early men roamed the Earth. Apparentley, we're not much smarter about that then they were.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all of the above comments. Scientific studies have shown that a major polar shift (the main danger) has happened before. The catch: the last major polar shift took over one million years. And please, don't go all guy with a sandwich board (you know, the ones that crazy people walk the streets with that say 'The end is nigh' on them?) on me.
ReplyDeleteI do not think that the end of the world is coming anytime soon. It will come someday, because nothing lasts forever, and our sun, as well as our planet will eventually die out. However I do not believe we will be around to see it happen. In anthropology we are studying the various hominid forms that came before us. They seem to last between 500,000 and 2,000,000 years. It is likely that we as a species will follow the same pattern. Our species has been around for about 200,000 years. Our planet has been around for 4 billion. It is believed that the world will last another few billion years.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Sandra. There have been so many years when we were supposed to die...and none of them have been correct (obviously). I think 2012 will be normal.
ReplyDeleteWell, let me ask another question. Since we all agree that the world will not end in 2012, when will the world end? And why?
ReplyDeleteFor example, I have no idea when I think the world will end. My educated guess is when our resources, from the planet Earth, run out. At the rate that we use oil and all other resources, only resources that can be replenished will be available. Or, a loss of other materials may make it so those materials will be useless as well! Does anyone else agree with me, or have a different case?
Sorry SheepLord, I did not see your edition onto your post. I agree with you that it is highly unlikely that humans will still be around until the sun dies.
