Insist on Your Rights!

"To have a right to do a thing is not at all the same as to be right in doing it."
~ G. K. Chesterton

• Do you think this quote is always true?  Whether "yes" or "no," justify your answer.
• Can you imagine and explain a situation in which the two things (right to do something) and (being right in doing it) actually align?
• Could this quote change our family lives, communities, American culture?  If so, how?  If not, why not?

  1. Yes, I think the quote is true. You can definitely do something that you have a 'legal right' to do but at the same time it could be something immoral to do. For example, being rude to people for no reason is legal but not right. If you are a principle, expelling a student from a school for no reason is legal but not the right thing to do.

I think that this quote just tells people that just because you can legally do something doesn't mean its not a bad thing to do, so it would be a good guideline for all three, especially the whole culture of America.

  2. A bit of a confusing quote.

I think that this is true in some cases, but false in others. However, this situation can go either way. Of course, it is legal to smoke. That does not make smoking right. Or, for example, the Founding Fathers, led by George Washington, trashed the Articles of Confederation (the previous constitution) and made the Constitution we know today. However, these men had absolutely no right to completely rewrite the Constitution, only to modify it. However, they found the many problems in the Articles and decided to trash it and make a new constitution. They had no right to do it, but it was right (just), seeing the current state of our country today.

I think that this quote is a good reminder as to whether certain actions are right, even if you have the right to do these actions. Also, most people have either 1-known this since they were 10 years old or 2-have completely ignored this lesson in their daily lives. I think that, even if nobody has been taught this directly, they would eventually learn through other lessons.

  3. I think it is true. We have a right to do many things. Some of these things are not necessarily the right thing to do
